Over the past few months we have not only continued ongoing improvements of our existing product lines, but we have also created a brand new convenient dispensing closure. This new Single-Flap Series 63-.400”closure is an extension of the popular Flapper® product line and will be available to order in January 2009. In an effort to meet our customers’ needs, this cap is on average 10-15% lighter than the previous generation of the 63mm Flapper® cap. One of our major initiatives in 2009 is to make our plant completely Landfill-Free. Weatherchem may be considered a medium-sized company, but we consider the obligation to provide sustainability to be a large concern and one to be taken very seriously. And, as a manufacturer in the packaging industry, there is an extra need to be socially responsible. The environmentally-aware corporation, regardless of physical size or revenues, can impact the environment, well-being of its employees, local communities and the future in positive ways. Furthermore, evidence that consumers are aware of sustainability issues continues to grow. Everything from rapidly growing sales of hybrid cars to companies like Hewlett-Packard’s claims of recycling 160 million pounds of materials indicates a level of consumer and corporate awareness.
Sustainability is being recognized as a global issue and studies show that consumers prefer to deal with companies that are environmentally- friendly. A recent packaging study done by Perception Research Services discovered that many consumers don’t understand which packaging is less harmful to the environment. One way brands might appeal to consumers is by demonstrating that their product is sustainable through consumer-friendly terminology such a “recyclable” or “environmentally-friendly.” This study also cautions that a product must maintain functionality, aesthetic appearance, and protection. The top 3 factors research participants considered the most when selecting which package to purchase included ease of opening, ability to reseal the package, and the perception of product quality. Many people are willing to pay more for green products, but not at the sacrifice of convenience or performance. At Weatherchem, we aim to make all new products 10% lighter while still maintaining functionality and appearance.

In developing True Lemon®, the original 100% all-natural crystallized lemon available in packets or shakers, True Lemon®’s manufacturer took the best of the lemon and made it more convenient. True Lemon® allows consumers to enjoy the genuine, refreshing taste of fresh-squeezed lemons any time, anywhere, without the mess, waste and sanitary concerns many associate with fresh lemon wedges. What’s more, the dispensing closure chosen for True Lemon®’s shaker is also flavored with what consumers favor-an easy-to-open, easy-to-close, stay-fresh Dual-Flap Flapper® cap. Grand Brands, Inc., the manufacturer of True Lemon®, recognized the importance of the package itself in ensuring fresh lemon taste with less labor and waste. Heidi Carney, Vice President of Consumer Marketing and Consumer Relations for Grand Brands, explained, “We wanted True Lemon® to have the convenience of being measured in a tablespoon or teaspoon for cooking or baking, as well as a shake option for seasoning. The Dual-Flap Flapper® does just that, in addition to being easy to open and close to keep the product fresh.”
